Termini - Punta Campanella
Termini is without doubt the best departure point for an excursion to Punta Campanella. This itinerary is sometimes associated with a visit to Monte san Costanzo, the classical walk is in effect a triangle with its points: Termini, Monte San Costanzo and Punta della Campanella. The shuttle of O sole mio Hotel will bring you to town’s square where following the signs, you will start your walking tour.
The very tip of the Sorrento peninsula, between the bay of Naples and the gulf of Salerno, is only 5 km away from Capri. Here was the Greek Temple of Athena, later dedicated to Minerva. The few ruins visible nowadays belong to a Roman villa of the III century. A few meters downhill is the Minerva tower, built in 1334 and restored in 1567.
On 12th december 1997 the protected Marine Area of Punta Campanella , was created to preserve the best landscape of Sorrento from pollution, clandestine fishing and other abuses to this natural paradise.
Today the controls are much rigorous but anyone who wants to visit this place is welcome.
The Authorities permit bathing, scuba diving, kayak. On sea beds at a depth of between 30-35 metres we can find the expanses of Posidonia oceanica which offer refuge and sustenance to a vast gamma of marine organisms, as colourful Nudibrachi Gastropods, or the best known Seahorse.
By the walk there is an enormous variety of flora and fauna to be found here: underwater rock faces covered by sea daisies, expances of green algae, marine cactus.
Deeper down we can find forests of white, yellow and red gorgonia, splendid sea fans with pink cleats and red Anthias swimming around them.
